What Is Gypsum?

Gypsum is calcium sulfate dihydrate: CaSO₄·2H₂O. It is a mineral amendment used to supply plant-available calcium and sulfur without the strong pH-raising effect of agricultural lime, calcitic lime, oyster shell flour, or dolomite.

In cannabis living soil, gypsum is a useful supporting amendment when calcium or sulfur is low, when a mix is magnesium-heavy, or when outdoor mineral soil has sodium-related compaction or poor water infiltration.

For most container cannabis gardens, gypsum should be used strategically and modestly. It is not a replacement for compost, worm castings, aeration, mulch, balanced mineral amendments, healthy roots, or proper irrigation practices.

Gypsum is more soluble than lime, allowing calcium and sulfate to move through the soil profile more readily. That can be useful, but it also makes it important to account for the rest of the calcium program before adding more.

Why Use Gypsum for Cannabis?

Cannabis is a calcium-demanding crop, especially during vigorous vegetative growth and flower development. In a properly built living soil, gypsum can help maintain calcium and sulfur availability while pH management remains the role of liming materials.

Gypsum will not solve poor drainage caused by a peat-heavy mix, missing aeration, excessive watering, root disease, or incorrect dry-back management.

Fine gypsum can become available relatively quickly, but it is not an immediate rescue input for a seriously deficient plant with compromised roots or nutrient lockout.

Release Timing

Gypsum does not primarily depend on microbial decomposition. It dissolves as moisture contacts the particles, releasing calcium and sulfate into the root zone. Particle size, moisture level, irrigation frequency, temperature, and soil contact all affect release speed.

Recommended Cannabis Rates

A soil test is the best way to determine whether gypsum is needed. Test pH, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, sodium, CEC, and base saturation before making major mineral changes—especially in recycled soil or mixes already using multiple calcium sources.

How to Apply Gypsum

New Soil Mixes

Incorporate Evenly

  • Measure gypsum from total soil volume.
  • Blend with other dry mineral amendments first.
  • Mix thoroughly through the full medium.
  • Add compost, castings, moisture, and mulch.
  • Allow the soil to cycle before transplanting.
Established Pots

Top-Dress Method

  • Pull back existing mulch.
  • Spread the measured gypsum evenly.
  • Keep material several inches from the stalk.
  • Lightly scratch into the top ½–1 inch.
  • Replace mulch and water normally.
Water Application

Gypsum and Other Calcium Sources

Living-soil recipes often include several calcium sources. Add them together before deciding on a gypsum rate. Do not add gypsum just because you want “more calcium” if your mix already contains lime, oyster shell, fish bone meal, crustacean meal, calcium-rich compost, hard water, or cal-mag.

Decision Protocol

When Gypsum Makes Sense

  • Soil pH is already in the desired range but calcium is low.
  • A soil test shows a low sulfur level.
  • Your irrigation water is low in calcium and sulfur.
  • You need a pH-neutral calcium source.
  • Your recipe contains little or no other calcium amendment.
  • Lab data supports calcium addition to a magnesium-heavy mix.
  • Outdoor mineral soil has a verified sodium or infiltration issue.

When to Avoid It

  • Soil calcium or sulfur is already high.
  • You need to raise soil pH.
  • You have not counted all calcium sources and irrigation water.
  • The problem is high EC, root disease, lockout, or irrigation inconsistency.
  • You already use a calcium-heavy bottled nutrient program.
  • The mix needs aeration and organic matter rather than minerals.
  • You are growing in a small container with salt accumulation.

Practical 15-Gallon Example

Handling + Use Responsibly

Use a soil test whenever possible. Excess calcium can reduce magnesium and potassium availability, particularly in small containers, heavily amended mixes, hard-water situations, or nutrient programs already using calcium-rich inputs.

DTE Solution Grade Gypsum is a very fine powder. Wear a dust mask or respirator, gloves, and eye protection while measuring and mixing. Work outside or in a well-ventilated area, avoid generating airborne dust, and keep the bag dry and sealed between uses.

Bottom line: Start at approximately ½–1 tablespoon per cubic foot for fresh soil building or around 1 teaspoon per gallon as a conservative top-dress. For a 15-gallon pot, use approximately 5 tablespoons only when your entire calcium program and soil test support it.
