Epsom Salt Foliar Spray for Cannabis

Plain, fragrance-free magnesium sulfate can be used as a targeted foliar magnesium-and-sulfur supplement for cannabis. Use it as a short-term response to likely magnesium deficiency—not as a substitute for balanced root-zone nutrition.

Fragrance-free Amazon Essentials or Amazon Basics magnesium sulfate may be usable as a cannabis foliar supplement only when the ingredient panel lists magnesium sulfate and nothing else. Do not assume all consumer Epsom products are suitable for plants just because they share the same name.

Do not use products containing fragrance, dyes, eucalyptus, lavender, tea tree, menthol, oils, essential oils, bath additives, moisturizers, or “relaxation blend” ingredients. Check the exact package in hand before mixing a spray.

Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate heptahydrate, written as MgSO₄·7H₂O. Once dissolved, it provides magnesium and sulfur—two nutrients involved in chlorophyll production, enzyme function, protein formation, photosynthesis, and plant metabolism.

Foliar spray is a fast, temporary correction tool. It can help when roots are not supplying enough magnesium quickly, but it will not permanently solve poor pH, excess root-zone EC, incorrect watering, poor root health, nutrient antagonism, or an incomplete base feeding program.

When to Use a Foliar Spray

Use an Epsom-salt foliar spray when symptoms are consistent with magnesium deficiency and you need a faster intervention than root-zone correction alone can provide. Confirm the likely cause before repeatedly spraying.

Magnesium deficiency often begins as yellowing between the veins of older fan leaves while the veins remain comparatively green.

Because magnesium is mobile, symptoms may begin on lower leaves and move upward if the deficiency or root-zone uptake problem continues.

Recommended Dilution Rates

Start conservatively with new equipment, an unfamiliar cultivar, a new environment, or a new consumer-product batch. Test a small area first and wait 24 hours before spraying the full canopy.

One-Gallon Recipe

Water Base

1 Gallon Clean Water

Use clean, room-temperature water. Low-mineral, filtered, or appropriately treated water is preferred when available.

Magnesium Sulfate

1 Tablespoon Plain Epsom Salt

Use only unscented, additive-free magnesium sulfate. Verify the actual ingredient panel before adding it to the sprayer.

Application Target

Fine Mist, Not Runoff

Mix crystals until completely dissolved, then apply a thin even mist that makes leaves glisten without soaking the canopy.

Mixing and Application Protocol

Step 01

Dissolve Completely

Add measured Epsom salt to a small volume of warm water, then stir until all crystals are dissolved.

Step 02

Fill to Final Volume

Pour the dissolved concentrate into the sprayer and add water until the final target volume is reached.

Step 03

Test First

Spray one or two leaves or a small area, then wait 24 hours and inspect for burn, spotting, curling, or discoloration.

Step 04

Mist Evenly

Spray both sides of leaves with a fine mist. Avoid heavy drenching, pooling, and spraying directly into dense flower sites.

Spray During Cool Periods

Spray early in the morning, near sunset, or indoors shortly after lights turn off. Avoid direct sun and high-intensity grow lights.

Mist, Do Not Drench

Mist leaves evenly until they glisten. Excessive runoff does not improve absorption and can leave unnecessary residue or moisture.

Cover Leaf Undersides

Apply to both sides of fan leaves, paying particular attention to undersides while keeping the overall spray light and controlled.

Dry Foliage Promptly

Maintain adequate airflow after application so leaves dry promptly. Do not leave dense foliage wet for prolonged periods.

Wait about 3–4 days before another application. Watch whether symptoms stop spreading and whether new growth remains greener.

Judge New Growth

Existing damaged leaves may not fully recover. A successful correction is better measured by stable, healthy new growth and halted symptom spread.

Flowering Precautions

Avoid routine foliar spraying once cannabis flowers begin to form densely. Wet buds can hold moisture, increasing mold risk, and foliar products may leave residues on finished flower.

Important Cautions

Use only unscented, additive-free magnesium sulfate. Do not spray cannabis with eucalyptus, lavender, tea tree, menthol, colored, scented, oil-containing, or “relaxation blend” Epsom-salt products.

Do not spray plants that are already heat stressed, wilted, recently transplanted, severely overfed, or suffering from obvious root-zone stress. A foliar spray cannot fix poor irrigation, high EC, pH drift, root damage, or a fundamentally incomplete nutrient program.

Do not use Epsom salt as a blanket flower booster. Magnesium sulfate does not provide nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, or a balanced micronutrient program. If symptoms continue after one or two applications, inspect root-zone pH, runoff EC, water quality, fertilizer ratios, and root health instead of escalating foliar concentration.

Keep the product bag and label available for verification. Consumer bath-product packaging is not necessarily written as cannabis foliar-use guidance, so confirm the ingredient panel and test a small area before applying any product across the crop.
