A practical guide to Down To Earth Dolomite Lime for cannabis-focused living soil: how it raises pH, supplies calcium and magnesium, how long it takes to react, label-based application rates, and why testing must come before application.

pH Control Is the Primary Job

Dolomite lime is a naturally occurring calcium-magnesium carbonate mineral. Its primary job is to neutralize acidity and raise soil pH. It also supplies calcium and magnesium, but those nutrients are part of a larger chemical shift: as dolomite reacts, it changes the availability of many other nutrients in the root zone.

This page uses Down To Earth Dolomite Lime as the baseline. The product is a prilled, finely ground dolomite material listed at 23.5% calcium and 9.5% magnesium. Its small granules are designed for easier spreading and a relatively rapid reaction compared with coarse agricultural limestone, but meaningful pH change still takes time.

For cannabis living soil, dolomite should never be treated as a routine calcium-and-magnesium supplement. Magnesium is central to chlorophyll and photosynthesis. It also competes with calcium and potassium in the root zone, so extra magnesium should be supplied only when analysis indicates it is appropriate.

Reaction Time & Soil Timing

Dolomite lime does not need microbial decomposition or a manure-style “cook.” It reacts chemically with soil acidity after it is mixed in and watered. Finer particles react faster than coarse limestone, and incorporation through the root zone greatly improves uniformity. Even with a fine, prilled product, pH correction is not instant: the full response can take months, especially in cool, dry, or poorly mixed soil.

Timing What Happens in Soil Practical Meaning
At Mixing Fine prills are distributed through the medium. The mineral has maximum contact when mixed evenly into the active root zone. Incorporate fully rather than relying on an uneven surface layer to correct the entire container.
Days 1 - 14 Moisture begins dissolving carbonate at particle surfaces and initiating neutralization of acidity near each particle. Some early pH effect may occur, but do not repeatedly add lime because a quick test does not show the final response.
Weeks 3 - 12 The reaction expands as water contacts more material. Soil texture, buffering capacity, application rate, temperature, and mixing depth determine the pace. Allow time and retest before making another large adjustment. Do not chase pH daily with additional amendments.
3 - 6 Months Much of the meaningful pH correction from incorporated lime may be expressed over this period, though the actual response varies. For a major pH correction, amend well before planting whenever possible and verify with a repeat soil test.
Long Term Remaining lime can continue reacting while calcium and magnesium remain part of the soil nutrient pool. Reused living soil should be tested before every major re-liming decision; pH and magnesium can accumulate over cycles.
Cook-time recommendation: Dolomite itself requires no microbial cooking period, but it should ideally be incorporated at least several weeks—and preferably around three months—before a major planting when pH correction is needed. If the same living-soil recipe contains manure, guano, or active nitrogen meals, allow the mix to cook according to those ingredients as well.

When Dolomite Makes Sense

Most cannabis-focused soil mixes perform best in a mildly acidic root-zone range, often approximately pH 6.0 to 7.0 for soil-grown plants. The correct target depends on the medium, water alkalinity, and crop system. A soil test that includes pH, buffer pH or lime requirement, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and cation exchange capacity is much more useful than reacting to a single leaf symptom.

  • Magnesium is low or marginal as well as soil acidity being present.
  • The amendment can be incorporated well before planting.

Choose Calcitic Lime Instead

  • pH needs correction but magnesium is already sufficient or high.
  • You need calcium without adding another substantial magnesium source.
  • Soil or water already contains magnesium sulfate, dolomite, or other Mg inputs.
  • A test recommends calcium carbonate specifically.

Do Not Add Yet

  • pH is already in the desired range.
  • A leaf symptom has not been confirmed with root-zone testing.
  • The mix already contains several calcium and magnesium amendments.
  • You need an immediate in-cycle response rather than a slow pH adjustment.

Down To Earth’s Dolomite Lime directions list 1 to 1.5 pounds per 100 square feet for preparing new vegetable or flower gardens. For pH adjustment, its table lists 3 pounds per 100 square feet at pH 6.0, 5 pounds at pH 5.5, and 10 pounds at pH 5.0. These are broad general-garden references, not a substitute for the lime requirement from a soil test. Container soil is especially easy to over-lime, so avoid guessing with large per-gallon doses.

Cannabis Stage Fit

Before Soil Build

The best time for a true pH correction. Test raw components, water, and planned compost before mixing a new living soil. Add dolomite only if acidity and magnesium status indicate it is appropriate.

Pre-Plant Conditioning

If it is needed, incorporate it evenly and provide as much lead time as possible. Several weeks is a minimum planning window; around three months is better for a large correction.

Vegetative Growth

Avoid making major lime corrections based only on foliage. If pH is confirmed too low, a small corrective plan may be appropriate, but lime is too slow and broad-spectrum to be a casual in-cycle nutrient fix.

Transition & Flower

Generally avoid major dolomite additions. A late pH shift can alter nutrient availability at a sensitive stage, and the magnesium addition may complicate potassium and calcium management.

Late Flower

Do not use it as a late-cycle rescue. It cannot deliver a fast, precise correction and may keep changing the root-zone chemistry after the crop’s remaining finish window.

The best time to retest reused soil and make slow pH corrections. Review the entire calcium-magnesium-potassium relationship before deciding whether dolomite, calcitic lime, gypsum, or no lime is appropriate.

Use With Intention

Dolomite lime is a long-term chemistry adjustment, not a generic “Cal-Mag” supplement. Extension guidance recommends dolomitic lime when soil magnesium is low to marginal; when magnesium is already adequate, calcitic lime may be the more appropriate choice for correcting soil acidity. Lime commonly needs months to significantly change pH, so test before applying, incorporate it ahead of planting, water appropriately, and retest before making additional large applications.
